Hina Syed is a Liaison Broker in the South Side Children and Family Services Centre here in Edmonton. She works mainly as a consultant with case workers and assessors when they get a referral from the community.  Sometimes community members will also contact her directly. Hina still does front line work, doing home visits, supporting families, making and implementing support plans, and she is well known and very much embedded in her community.

Languages Hina Syed speaks

Hina Syed is from Pakistan. She came to Canada 16 years ago with her husband and three young children, swapping a lavish lifestyle back home for the struggles of being a new immigrant in Canada, because they valued the political and economic security here. As a devout Muslim, she sometimes struggles to reconcile her religious beliefs with supporting families with issues that conflict with those beliefs. She holds that on-going ‘third space’ tension with grace, honesty and prayer.

Hina2What Hina loves about her work with MCHB:

  • To empower families and see them grow. To accept and work with people where they’re at.
  • She is touched when her clients call her “didi” which means sister.  It’s such an intimate and yet respectful way to be addressed.
  • She also loves the freedom and flexibility of her work.
