Multicultural Family Support for Children with Disabilities

Families who have a child with a disability may require additional care to learn how to enhance their family’s health and well-being.

We provide collaborative care with Family Support for Children with Disabilities staff. We strive to help families fully access services and resources from a broad network of organizations. The Brokers also build capacity of families with children with disabilities.

“It is rewarding for me when I see a family have happiness and a peaceful life after I become involved.”

– Julie, Multicultural Health Broker

We focus on trusting relationships, enhancing family knowledge and developing appropriate child management strategies. We do this through holistic family support addressing the broader social and economic determinants of health; parents’ mutual support groups; and community education to remove stigmas that are associated with the children’s disabilities.

The program benefits from collaboration about family advocacy with the Alberta Association for Community Living (AACL). We advocate in the areas of education, immigration and social services as they relate to children with disabilities.

“As Brokers, we have a responsibility to the families to help them get through difficult and stressful times.”

– Julie

This program has been directly funded by Family Support for Children with Disabilities – Edmonton and Area Child & Family Services, since 2006.
