Intercultural Early Learning

“We must recognize the linguistic and cultural diversity in our schools and other early learning and care settings. Our programs need to be innovative and create a sense of belonging for these new families.”

– Donna-Mae, Project Developer

We have collaborated with the Edmonton Public School Board to create an intercultural, play-based learning program for families with young children who are 3 ½ to 4 years of age. We serve families at Balwin School, McCauley School, Caernarvon School and ABC Head Start sites. We strive to nurture welcoming environments for families, and engage parents in classroom programming.

Our Home Language and Cultural Facilitators work in the classroom with Early Childhood Educators to build: home language and English learning; culturally affirming activities; intercultural curriculum and programming; and seamless home to school support for families.

This program currently partners with families within the Kurdish, Iraqi, Somali, Sudanese, Eritrean and Ethiopian communities. Our generous funders are Alberta Education, Edmonton Public Schools, and ABC Head Start.
