Meet our Health Brokers!

Our Health Brokers work tirelessly to provide professional dedicated service with compassion and understanding.  We hope you enjoy getting to know Hina Syed, broker in the South Side Children and Family Services Centre in Edmonton.tsedale1

Tsedale Aregawi is from Ethiopia.  Was in a Refugee camp for six years in South Africa before coming to Canada in 2005.  Came 4 months pregnant, no family and just one friend.  She met her husband in the refugee camp – took 5 years to bring him over.  They have two children and another on the way.  Her son, the second child, is autistic and is her ‘blessing’. Her greatest inspiration is her grandmother, who taught her about real love and wisdom.  Her father was an example of strength and determination.  Together they make up the core of who she is.

Tsedale was introduced to Tigist who connected her to MCHB.  Went through perinatal program and Health for Two as a client.  Began volunteering for an Eritrean /Ethiopian women’s group – and this was her route to become a broker and community leader.tsedale3

She works at Mayfield school for children with disabilities (interpreting for families, emotional and practical support and sharing her own lived experience).  She facilitates a group for Ethiopian and Eritrean parents of autistic children.  She also does home visitations and intervention work. She still helps to support the women’s group that she joined 12 years ago, along with Tigist, Serawit, Yodit and Paster Mengstab.

What Tsedale loves about her work

  • Her passion is children – she wants them to be happy, playful and safe.  She loves being with them.  Despite her busy work schedule, she still found time to volunteer to look after them at Sunday School for 5 years (stopping now because of her pregnancy)
  • She loves learning at MCHB and says that it’s her home.
